Caren Bakkum, Cooking Instructor
Caren’s experience with macrobiotics began over 30 years ago, when she discovered macrobiotics and decided to try it out for six or eight weeks. That experiment let to a long term lifestyle of healthy cooking and eating. During the early 1980s she studied at the Kushi Institute, then with the Aiharas in Oroville, California. After a move to the Washington, DC area in the mid 1980s, she attended lectures with Michael Rossoff in Bethesda, Maryland, and soon after began working in his office, along with teaching macrobiotic cooking classes for the next 10 years. Her special interest is food in history and culture, from ancient to modern times.
Since moving to the mountains for North Carolina in 1995, she has worked in various jobs, continues to assist Michael Rossoff in his business as well as enjoying cooking and other projects.
